The Signboard Calligrapher

Museum Grade reprint on Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm mould-made paper. Limited reprint. Handcrafted signs once dominated Hong Kong's visual landscape, and at the forefront of keeping that dying tradition alive is calligrapher Au Yeung Cheong. The work of Au Yeung, distinguished by his use of Zan Script, still adorns shopfronts and businesses across town. For nearly 40 years, he worked fastidiously from his bastion in a historical building that was shuttered for redevelopment in late 2020. But that hasn't stopped him. This painting is part of the ongoing series titled "Unspoken Stories, Unsung Heroes" - watercolor sketches paying tribute to the remarkable men and women who are keeping Hong Kong's fading traditional industries alive. With few or no successors left, most of these trades are believed to become history within this decade and disappear entirely with this generation of artisans and craftsmen.
